If you’re considering taking a Christmas Market River Cruise on the Rhine River from Amsterdam to Basel or another holiday river cruise, you’re in for a magical experience! I’m thrilled to share some insider tips and answer some common questions to help you prepare for this wonderful journey.
I’ve gathered a list of common questions I’ve received as a travel agent. If you have others, please let me know. More FAQ can be found on the AmaWaterway website HERE
Common Questions:
1. How many Christmas markets will we visit?
You’ll visit a myriad of charming Christmas markets throughout your cruise! Typically, you’ll explore 1 market per day and some ports have multiple markets, each offering unique local crafts, festive foods, and a heartwarming holiday atmosphere.
2. Will we see any markets in the evenings?
Absolutely! One of the best parts of this cruise is experiencing the markets at night. The twinkling lights, festive decorations, and bustling crowds create an enchanting evening that you won’t want to miss. One way to determine which ports you visit longer is looking at your itinerary. Notice words like “overnight at port” or Evening excursion options and if you get 2 excursions on one day are clues that you will be there later in the evening. Usually you don’t know exact itinerary until you check in online or your exact itinerary and excursion options are sent.
3. What currency should I bring?
You’ll be visiting several countries, so it’s good to have both Euros and Swiss Francs. Most markets in Germany, France, and the Netherlands will accept Euros, while in Switzerland, Swiss Francs are used.
4. Will vendors at the markets accept credit cards?
Many vendors do accept credit cards, but it’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand, especially for smaller purchases. Some quaint stalls may only accept cash.
5. What is the most economical way to exchange currency?
The most economical way to exchange currency is usually by using your debit card at local ATMs. This often gives you a better exchange rate and lower fees compared to airport exchange counters or currency exchange shops. Be sure to notify your bank of your travel plans to avoid any issues with your card.
6. When do I make my captain’s dinner or Chef’s Table reservations?
When you first board your river cruise you should go directly to guest services and book any special dinners like the Captain’s dinner when you first arrive. Be flexible with those dates and look at your itinerary to make sure which evenings you will be on board for dinner and not on an evening port adventure. If you book with a group, that is often planned in advance with your group coordinator.
7. I’m worried about jetlag, what can I do to avoid being miserable the first few days?
I recommend arriving 2-3 days prior to your cruise to a city near your port. This helps avoid 2 issues. The first is if you have any flight delays, you have some wiggle room for your arrival. Secondly, it gives you a day or 2 of rest and acclamation to the the time change. Some river cruises offer pre-cruise and post cruise land options. Or talk to your travel agent and they can set you up if you want to do something on your own.
The Wonders and Beauty of the Cruise:
Imagine drifting along the serene waters of the Rhine River, surrounded by picturesque landscapes and medieval castles. Each stop on your journey brings you to a new, enchanting town, where the air is filled with the scent of mulled wine and gingerbread. The historic architecture, festive market stalls, and twinkling lights create a fairy-tale atmosphere that is simply unforgettable.
You’ll have the chance to savor local delicacies, shop for handmade crafts, and immerse yourself in the holiday spirit in a way that is both authentic and heartwarming. This cruise is not just a trip; it’s a bucket list experience that will leave you with beautiful memories to cherish for a lifetime.
